The Pine in Chudobín
Czech and European Tree of the year
A Scots pine known as the Guardian of the Flooded Village won the awards Tree of the Czech Republic in 2019 and European Tree of the Year in 2020. Towering over the flooded valley of the Svratka river, it is between 300 and 350 years old.
According to the legend narrated by locals, a devil sits by this tree in the night and plays the violin. But maybe it is just a metaphor for the strong winds blowing over the valley. The pine is, however, a significant landmark as well as an impressive testimony to its resistance to moody weather and human impact.
